Confirm what product is actually being offered

Names such as crushed concrete, recycled concrete aggregate, concrete base, and washout material may be used differently by suppliers. Ask about maximum particle size, fines, contamination control, consistency, and the intended application.

Prepare the area before adding material

Remove unsuitable material as required, address soft spots, establish drainage, shape the grade, and use separation or stabilization when the site design calls for it. Covering mud, organic soil, or standing water with more rock usually creates a recurring problem.

  • Identify where water enters and leaves the area
  • Mark soft areas and buried utilities
  • Plan finished elevation at garages, gates, roads, and drains
  • Confirm layer thickness for the expected traffic
  • Arrange equipment and compaction before delivery

Place, shape, and compact in a planned sequence

Large piles are harder to move by hand than many DIY projects expect. Decide how the truck will unload, how material will be distributed, what equipment will shape the surface, and how each layer will be compacted.

Plan for maintenance

Unpaved surfaces can migrate, rut, wash, and develop potholes. Preserve crown or cross-slope, keep drainage paths open, and repair localized failures before they spread across the surface.

Does crushed concrete become as hard as new concrete?+

No. A compacted aggregate surface is not the same as a designed and placed concrete pavement. Performance depends on the full base and drainage system.

Should I put limestone on top?+

A separate top course may improve appearance or surface behavior, but compatibility, gradation, drainage, thickness, and traffic should be evaluated for the actual site.
