Rock cannot drain an area without a workable slope, outlet, infiltration path, or designed drainage system. Trace water during rain and identify buildings, roads, neighbors, utilities, and regulated features that could be affected.
Clean rock and base material serve different functions
Clean stone contains less fine material and can allow water to move through its voids. A graded base contains smaller particles that help it compact. Substituting one for the other can change drainage and stability.
Separate soil from stone when the design requires it
Fine soil can migrate into clean rock and reduce its void space. Drainage systems may require geotextile, graded filters, pipe, bedding, outlets, or erosion protection selected for the actual conditions.
